Eshelby Transformations, Pore Pressure and Fluid Mass Changes, and Subsidence

چکیده
This paper is motivated by a recent analysis by Walsh (2002) of subsidence above a planar reservoir. Although the problem has been treated previously by Geertsma (1966, 1973a, b) and Segall (1992), Walsh (2002) uses a different approach. In particular, he uses a cut and weld procedure, originated by Eshelby (1957), and the reciprocal theorem of elasticity. Walsh obtains the same results as Geertsma and Segall but the connection between the two approaches is not evident. The purpose of this paper is to generalize the approach used by Walsh (2002) and to develop the connection to the approach of Geertsma and Segall.

Deriving Biot-Gassmann relationship by inclusion-based method
The quasi-static theory of poroelasticity presented by Biot and Gassmann provides a relationship between the drained and undrained elastic constants of an isotropic fluid-saturated porous material in terms of the porosity of the material, bulk modulus of the solid grains, and bulk modulus of the pore fluid. We have developed an alternative approach to derive the Biot-Gassmann (BG) relationship ...
متن کاملDynamic bulk and shear moduli due to grain-scale local fluid flow in fluid-saturated cracked poroelastic rocks_ Theoretical model
Grain-scale local fluid flow is an important loss mechanism for attenuating waves in cracked fluid-saturated poroelastic rocks. In this study, a dynamic elastic modulus model is developed to quantify local flow effect on wave attenuation and velocity dispersion in porous isotropic rocks. The Eshelby transform technique, inclusion-based effective medium model (the Mori–Tanaka scheme), fluid dyna...
متن کاملDetermination of Pore Pressure from Sonic Log: a Case Study on One of Iran Carbonate Reservoir Rocks
Pore pressureis defined as the pressure of the fluid inside the pore space of the formation, which is also known as the formation pressure. When the pore pressure is higher than hydrostatic pressure, it is referred to as overpressure. Knowledge of this pressure is essential for cost-effective drilling, safe well planning, and efficient reservoir modeling. The main objective of this study is to ...
متن کاملAccuracy Assessment of GLM and FDA Models for Land Subsidence Susceptibility Mapping in Semnan Plain
The mechanism of land subsidence and soil deformation is the dissipation of the excess pore water pressure and the compaction of the soil skeleton under the effect of natural or man-made factors. Land subsidence has occurred in more of 300 plains of Iran, and Semnan Plain is one of the most important areas that face to this phenomenon. The aim of current research was land subsidence susceptibil...
متن کاملTransient poroelastic response of equivalent porous media over a mining panel
A transient poroelastic formulation based on the Biot consolidation theory is presented to study the impact of underground longwall mining of coal on strata deformation and the subsequent modification of hydrogeological properties. A finite-element model is used where the geometric conditions may be complex. The important parameters in this model are identified as pore pressure ratio, ct 1 and ...
